Individual lots in Old Town, called "peonias" in the new historic zoning for Old Town, are considered urban lots, approximately 46 feet wide by 93 feet deep. The definition of a peonia comes from the 1573 Spanish "Law of the Indies," developed under the rule of Phillip II, to organize its cities in the New World. During Spain's conquest of the Americas, foot soldiers were called "peons." After a soldier's service to the Crown, he was offered one lot of land as payment. The lots were called "peonias" and they are the same exact size from Buenos Aires to Mexico City to Havana to Old Town on Amelia Island!
